Credit-card data breach hits Discover Financial - Finance News ...

(Crain's) ? Discover Financial Services is among the credit card-payment processors hit by a data-security breach when Global Payments Inc. had its systems breached.

The Riverwoods-based financial company, along with MasterCard Inc., Visa Inc. and American Express Co., were affected by unauthorized access to Global Payments' data. Global Payments is a third-party services provider. The breach also affected banks that issue debit and credit cards.

It was not immediately clear how many cardholders are victims of the breach.

Global Payments said it had detected a breach of card data in early March. Breaches of card data can lead to identity theft and unauthorized charges.

U.S. law enforcement authorities including the Secret Service are investigating and MasterCard said it has hired an independent data-security organization to review the incident.

Credit card companies generally protect customers against fraudulent transactions, and Visa said specifically Friday that its U.S. customers were not at risk. Both Visa and MasterCard said their own systems had not been compromised.

JPMorgan Chase & Co, as well as American Express and Discover, which issue their own cards, said they are monitoring customers' accounts and would issue new cards to anyone whose information may have been compromised.

Analysts said any financial losses from the data breach would be shouldered by merchants, card issuers and Global Payments rather than Visa or Mastercard, which operate payment networks.

Citigroup Inc said it has been notified by processors of the breach. Bank of America Corp declined to comment on the matter and Wells Fargo & Co said it was too early to comment on the impact.

Banks and processors emphasized customers would not be held liable for any fraudulent charges that may occur.

Last June, hackers stole information for 360,000 credit card accounts at Citigroup. In the past year, there have been high-profile data attacks against the International Monetary Fund, National Public Radio, Google and Sony's PlayStation Network.

Don't be fooled by her Twitter tussles with rap vets: Azealia Banks is on her grind. The Harlem MC didn't let expulsion from this year's XXL Freshman Class keep her down. Instead, she's kept up her buzz up, at a noise level guaranteed to pick up a few decibels when she drops a new EP next month.

Banks confirmed via tweet this week that 1991 is due April 17 and will include the title track, plus "Grand Prix." The project's title is a nod to the year that gave us seminal albums like Nirvana's Nevermind, and artists like the 20-year-old Banks.

As for sonic expectations, we're hoping her brand-new "F--- Up the Fun" is a hint at what's to come. On the Diplo-produced number, the "212" rapper channels another New York femcee — Bedford-Stuyvesant's Foxy Brown — spitting rapid-fire over a relentless bass line. (Still no word on the whereabouts of her promised 212 EP, though, as Pitchfork pointed out.)

And while Banks took issue with fellow upstart Iggy Azalea landing a prime spot on the aforementioned XXL cover, the Aussie rapper can't yet claim a full page in men's bible GQ. The potty-mouthed Yung Rapunzel gets glossy revenge in the magazine's April "Style" issue, where they styled the cocoa beauty in a striped tank and petal-shaped yellow shorts; her smile is sly and her locks wind-blown.

After breaking through on last fall's viral smash "212," Banks is at work on her Interscope debut, due in September. She's tapped A-list U.K. producer Paul Epworth (Florence and the Machine, Foster the People) for an assist on Broke With Expensive Taste. In the accompanying GQ interview, Azealia spouts off about being an Internet sensation, Kanye West and who inspires her musically ("Azealia Banks") — all with that unmistakable Uptown 'tude.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NFL has suspended New Orleans head coach Sean Payton for the 2012 season, and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is banned from the league indefinitely because of the team's bounty program that targeted opposing players.

Commissioner Roger Goodell will review Williams' status after the upcoming season and consider whether he can return to the league.

Also Wednesday, Goodell suspended Saints general manager Mickey Loomis for the first eight regular-season games of 2012, and assistant coach Joe Vitt has to sit out the first six games.

In addition, the Saints are being fined $500,000 and forfeit second-round draft picks this year and in 2013.

The investigation began in 2010 after allegations were made that Saints players had gone after players, including Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner and Vikings quarterback Brett Favre.

Warner was injured in an NFC divisional playoff game by defensive end Bobby McCray after an interception when the Saints player blindsided him on a block. Favre, meanwhile, was injured when he was tackled in a high-low manner in the third quarter of the NFC championship game.

Prior to Super Bowl XLIV, Williams told a Nashville radio station that he preferred his players deliver ?remember me? shots.

Williams came to New Orleans in 2009 to revamp a defense that many believed had become too soft. His heavy blitzing style was lauded that season as it helped the Saints? defense become one of the best at taking the ball away.

After his contract expired this offseason, Williams took a job with the St. Louis Rams and friend Jeff Fisher, ending his tenure with the Saints.

Nokia to Apple: don't cha wish your nano-SIM was hot like ours?

Don't you hate it when the biggest wars can be started over the smallest things? This time around, we're referring to this in a very literal sense, as Apple has been putting the heat on (no, not that kind of heat) against an alliance formed by Nokia, Motorola and RIM regarding nano-SIM standards. With the ETSI gearing up for a vote on various proposals next week, the two sides are locking horns, determined to prove theirs is the best. Last we heard, concerns were flying left and right that Apple was planning to move ahead with its nano-SIM unilaterally, snatch up a smorgasbord of patents along its path and seize control of the governing body by registering six subsidiaries to vote. Considering Nokia is the current vote leader and claims its design has "significant technical advantages," we can understand why the Finnish giant would be worried. But how, exactly, is its design any better off?

A Nokia representative gave some more clarity to The Verge about the perks its version offers. The company claims Apple's standard doesn't meet the ETSI-approved requirements, which if true would make it incredibly difficult -- in theory, anyway -- to win over votes. Also, unlike Cupertino's version, Nokia's card doesn't require a tray or drawer, which equates to more space, allows for more design innovations and decreases the cost of manufacturing in comparison. Lastly, Espoo also argues that its competitor's proposal wouldn't be backwards-compatible with micro-SIM slots. Sounds legit, but we'd love to hear the opposing team offer its rebuttal before next week's vote. As it stands, we doubt this is the last round in the war of words before everything is settled. Just because three major online dating sites have agreed to screen for sex offenders and offer some advice about predators doesn't get you off the hook. That's right: You, the good egg, the one who's trying to find a nice guy or gal on a reputable online dating site. You still need to be careful. Very careful.

The California attorney general's office announced Tuesday that Match.com, eHarmony and Spark Networks signed a joint statement of business principles "intended to provide an example for the industry and help guard against sexual predators, identity theft and financial scams," according to the Associated Press story.

The online dating sites "can't be sued for not following this, but it puts them in the public eye," said Lynda Gledhill, a spokeswoman for the attorney general's office.

It may put them in the public eye, but don't let it give you a false sense of security. No matter what kind of screening is done, nothing is fool-proof, especially when it comes to information like this. So, before you click too much or too far, you hopefully know some of the basic red flags, but here are some more to keep in mind:

• When it comes to moving from the online dating site communication to your own email, "provide an email address that isn't your regular one," writes Joe Tracy, publisher of Online Dating Magazine. "Sign up for a free Yahoo!, Hotmail, or Gmail account that you use just for online dating. Don't put your full name in the From field ? only your first name or something else. This protects you from a person being able to search your normal email address to find out more information about you."
• Don't ever give out your cellphone or home number. Ever. OK: maybe when you're ready to walk up the aisle. Instead, use a prepaid cellphone.
• Match.com has several safety suggestions listed, including: "Drive yourself to and from the first meeting. Just in case things don?t work out, you need to be in control of your own ride ? even if you take a taxi," and when you're out with your date, to not leave "personal times unattended" (like your phone or wallet). If you're drinking, "keep your drink with you at all times so it can?t be tampered with."
• Spark.com suggests saving your copies of your online conversations, especially in chat areas or chat rooms. "The easiest method of logging conversations is to simply highlight your entire conversation and paste it into a word program. Save each conversation and date it."
• "Never do anything you feel unsure about," says Pepper Schwartz, a sociology professor at the University of Washington and a relationship expert at PerfectMatch.com. "If you feel uncomfortable with your date, use your best judgment to diffuse the situation and move on down the road. Excuse yourself long enough to call a friend for advice, ask someone for help wherever you are, or simply slip out the back and drive away. If you feel you are in danger, immediately call the police ... It's always better to be safe than sorry. Never worry or feel embarrassed about your behavior. Remember, your safety is much more important than one person's opinion of you."

Why Syria Won't Get the Libya Treatment from the West

One year ago, On March 19, 2011, Western leaders, alarmed by the disaster unfolding in Libya, voted in the U.N. Security Council to intervene militarily with "all necessary means," arguing that they could not stand by and watch civilians get massacred. As a result of the U.N. resolution, NATO launched a bombing campaign, led by Britain, France and the U.S., and flew about 10,000 bombing sorties over Libya, helping to obliterate Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year dictatorship in just seven months.

So, could it happen in Syria? Probably not, according to two reports out on Monday. Both suggest that the Western powers would face significantly bigger challenges in intervening against President Bashar Assad, both politically and militarily, than they did in Libya. Says the British military think tank Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in a report marking the anniversary of the U.N. vote, "The Libya intervention took place in a singularly unique moment where the international stars, as it were, were aligned in a set of propitious circumstances." Unlike Gaddafi, Assad has hugely upgraded his air and sea attack capabilities since the revolt against him erupted a year ago, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), which tracks the opaque defense industry. In its yearly report on global arms transfers, also to be published on Monday, SIPRI lists billions spent by Assad on state-of-the-art Russian systems, much of which has been delivered during the past year. "This is a major upgrade," says Paul Holtom, SIPRI senior researcher on arms transfers. "Any discussions about an air attack on Syria would be more challenging than it would have been previously."

Last year, Russia delivered as many as 36 Pantsyr-SI anti-aircraft missiles to Syria, according to SIPRI. Lightweight and mobile, the medium-range missiles can be mounted on the back of trucks, making them difficult for combat jets to target. In addition, the organization believes Russia has recently delivered upgraded versions of the MIG-29 combat aircraft to Syria. And it has upgraded hundreds of T-72 tanks every year since 2007, fitting them with far more modern weapons; in recent weeks, opposition activists in the besieged city of Homs filmed video footage showing T-72 tanks in action during the assault on the city.

Aside from the Pantsyr, Russia also sent Syria other modern anti-aircraft missiles last year, including about 40 SA-17 Grizzly missiles and two medium-range SA-17 Buk systems, according to SIPRI. And despite the worlds outrage over Assad's crackdown, Assad announced a $550-million deal with Russia in January, for 36 light training and combat aircraft called Yak-130. Indeed, if Gaddafi had taken delivery of the weapons which Assad now has, he would have proved a more formidable foe against NATO forces, according to Holtom; Gaddafis order for six Yak-130s had not been delivered by the time the Libyan revolt erupted in February last year, and he lacked new-generation anti-aircraft weapons. "These are systems Gaddafi did not have," Holtom told TIME. "He was in advance discussions about buying a number of air defense and combat aircraft from the Russians, but he never bought them."

That turned out to be a lucky break for NATO, according to RUSI. It says the Libya campaign was much more difficult than Western leaders revealed publicly at the time making the prospect of a Syria campaign much more worrisome for politicians with the Libya experience behind them. When NATO began bombing Libya last March, Gaddafi was a a much tougher enemy than the coalitions leaders, British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, had calculated. Having argued at the U.N. only to protect civilians in eastern Libya, "the operation was conceived at the lowest level and for the shortest period of time," writes RUSI Director of International Security Studies Jonathan Eyal in the report.

Instead, it quickly morphed into an all-out war. That severely strained European militaries, which flew 90% of the attack sorties. "European stockpiles struggled to cope," writes Elizabeth Quintana, a RUSI air-power senior research fellow, adding that the U.S. ultimately had to "plug the gaps." And since Britains Tornado and Typhoon jets were flying daily sorties over Libya, Britain's own airspace was left dangerously vulnerable. In addition, she says, European militaries were relying on aging aircraft ill-equipped for the intensity and fast pace of Libya's war. (Cover Story: The World After Gaddafi)

As Libya's war dragged on for months, the strain on NATO forces grew more evident. Indeed, Cameron and Sarkozy must have breathed a sigh of relief when Libyan rebels finally killed Gaddafi on Oct. 20, ending the NATO campaign. "The armed forces were lucky the rebels toppled the Gaddafi regime when they did," Quintana writes.

Ironically, the Libyan war now makes it more difficult for Western leaders to win U.N. approval for military intervention against Assad, even though Syria looks worse than Libya did last March: U.N. officials estimate that more than 8,000 people have been killed in Syria's yearlong revolt, including many civilians in assaults against Homs, Idlib and other opposition enclaves.

This time around, however, Russia with veto powers at the U.N. Security Council has made it clear it will not ditch its longtime ally; it maintains its only naval base in the region in Syria's port of Tartus. Russian officials have said repeatedly they believe Western leaders misled them at the U.N. in March 2011 by saying NATO attacks were only to protect civilians, rather than to overthrow Gaddafi; China which also has veto powers at the Security Council has expressed similar views.

In truth, Gaddafi did critical damage to his own cause a mistake from which Assad seems to have learned. In firebrand speeches in Tripoli last February and March, Gaddafi dared Western leaders to attack his country, and scorned several overtures by them and the Arab League to negotiate a political settlement or exile deal. The RUSI report says Gaddafi "virtually invited military action upon himself. What dictator would now ever risk announcing to the worlds media his intention to butcher an entire city like rats," a phrase Gaddafi used frequently to describe his opposition.

Notwithstanding the assault on Syrias opposition, there are differences: U.N. envoy Kofi Annan flew to Damascus last week to discuss possible negotiations with Assad. "Gaddafi had no powerful friends, and was isolated in a way that Bashar al-Assad, for example, is not," says the RUSI report. And so far those friends are standing by their mana leader who now has other weapons at hand.

2 blasts hit Syria capital, state news agency says

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) ? Two "terrorist explosions" struck security targets in the Syrian capital Saturday morning, killing a number of civilians and security forces, the country's state news agency said.

The report said preliminary information indicated the blasts were caused by car bombs that hit the aviation intelligence department and the criminal security department at around 7:30 a.m local time. Shooting broke out in the wake of the blast and sent residents and others who had gathered in the area fleeing, an Associated Press reporter at the scene said.

The state-run news agency, SANA, posted gruesome photographs of the scene, with mangled and charred corpses, bloodstains on the streets and twisted steel.

"All our windows and doors are blown out," said Majed Seibiyah, 29, who lives in the area. "I was sleeping when I heard a sound like an earthquake. I didn't grasp what was happening until I hear screaming in the street."

One year into the Syrian revolt, the fight to oust President Bashar Assad is transforming into a nascent civil war. The regime says it is fighting foreign terrorists and armed gangs, denying there is a popular will behind the revolt. But Assad's opponents say they have been forced to carry weapons because the government used tanks, snipers and machine guns to crush peaceful protests.

Syria has seen a string of suicide bombings, the last major one on Feb. 10, when twin blasts struck security compounds in the government stronghold city of Aleppo, killing 28 people.

Damascus, another Assad stronghold, has seen three suicide previous bombings since December.

The regime has touted the attacks as proof that it is being targeted by "terrorists." The opposition accuses forces loyal to the government of being behind the bombings to tarnish the uprising.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the explosions.

The U.N. estimates that more that 8,000 people have been killed since the uprising against Assad began last March.

In recent weeks, Syrian forces have waged a series of heavy offensives against the main strongholds of the opposition ? Homs in central Syria, Idlib in the north and Daraa in the south.

The bloodshed fuels the country's sectarian tensions. The military's top leadership is stacked heavily with members of the minority Alawite sect, to which Assad and the ruling elite belong.

Sunnis are the majority in the country of 22 million and make up the backbone of the opposition.

Diplomatic efforts to solve the crisis have so far brought no result. But U.N. envoy Kofi Annan told the Security Council in a briefing Friday that he would return to Damascus even though his recent talks with Assad saw no progress in attempts to cobble together peace negotiations between the two sides.

After the confidential briefing via videolink, Annan told reporters in Geneva that he urged the council "to speak with one voice as we try to resolve the crisis in Syria." Russia and China have blocked U.N. action against Assad's regime.

"The first objective is for all of us to end the violence and human rights abuses and the killings and get unimpeded access for humanitarian access to the needy, and of course the all-important issue of political process that will lead to a democratic Syria," Annan said.

Both Assad and much of the opposition spurned Annan's appeal for talks.

You want to make sure that you are giving your body the fuel that it needs to make the progress that you want. Fast food may be tasty and easy to get, but it really is only going to leave you feeling lethargic and bloated, two things that do not go well with bodybuilding.
