U.S. House likely to stay in GOP hands on Election Day

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrats and Republicans are spending millions of dollars and airing thousands of TV commercials as they battle for the House's 435 seats. But the Election Day result is likely to look familiar.

Democrats may erode the GOP majority slightly but they seem unlikely to gain the 25 additional seats they need to take control of the chamber.

Republicans have a money advantage and are using it to link Democratic candidates to President Barack Obama's economic stimulus and health care laws.

Democrats are accusing Republicans of trying to dismantle Medicare and use the savings to pay for tax cuts for the rich.

Both sides are trying to figure out the impact GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's recent campaign struggles will have on House races. So far that seems limited.

Looking For a Literate Role Playing Partner(s) :)

For the time being I have no set idea for a role play, but my mind's rather...Crazy. xP I can come up with an idea fast and run with it. Though, I love hearing ideas from others, so please feel free to shoot me a PM about something. Like stated above I'm up..down for anything! :D I like playing either gender, male or female. Recently I've been portraying males more often than females. That I do not mind, it's fun portraying them. HOWEVER, I would appreciate it if my partner(s) were able to portray BOTH genders. I, usually, like to double-up on genders in role plays. Speaking of which, I have a small list of things I require my partner(s) to be able to do. Nothing too serious, I promise. :) ::

ONE- Like in the title, I prefer, require, my role playing partner(s) to be LITERATE, as in: Proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and so forth. I understand the mistakes, I make a lot myself, but just try, okay? Along with that, I require a three paragraph post(per character) as a minimum. I write that much for my characters, usually, if not more unless I'm having a little writers' block.
TWO- Be able to play both genders fairly well. Unless homosexual, I do not want to see a supposedly heterosexual man running around giggling. C'mon people! >_
THREE- Be able to post AT LEAST twice a week, maybe more than once a day. Please, please, please do not ditch me after one or two posts. If you gotta be gone for awhile, tell me. I understand life comes first. I have a family and friends, too. :P Plus, we all get sick: LIFE HAPPENS! That being said, I'll alert you when I must be gone as well. ^.^
FOUR- Give me ideas and have an input on ideas and characters! :D I want things strongly character-based, and I want things interesting!!! Tell me if something is not going how you like it, we can work something out. I want a creative amigo!!!!

Christian Louboutin has a monopoly on high fashion red soled shoes in the U.S. Among those who the French fashion designer has to thank are: Kate White (the outgoing Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan), Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lady Gaga, and a gaggle of other prominent celebrities. Who knew that their obsession with what a federal court has called his ?Chinese red lacquered shoe sole? would help Louboutin get a trademark for it?

The Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals found, shortly before the start of New York?s Fashion Week, that Louboutin had the exclusive right to use that ?look? on shoes in the United States. In its Sept. 5 decision, the court said that look was a ?trademark? of Louboutin.

But wait, a trademark is like a cattle brand, right? It symbolizes who owns the cow but doesn?t prevent others from selling different cows. Ah, there?s the rub. When a trademark is the thing itself?in this case the red shoe sole?the line blurs into a legal monopoly of sorts. As a result, Louboutin is the only designer with rights to sell shoes with that look. The trademark has become the style and Louboutin has cornered the market.

How did Louboutin achieve this fashion first?

In 1992, in the midst of the last global recession, Christian Louboutin introduced an unlikely tonic for the economic malaise: black high heels with a bright red lacquered sole. Expensive, perhaps impractical, but dramatic. The shoes caught on with leading celebrities, soon followed by the fashion-forward crowd. Louboutin said the look is sexy, has energy, and ?attracts men to the women who wear my shoes.? Well, maybe . . . but do those qualities make it a legal monopoly? No. By themselves, they are just a style.

Color trademarks take time to gain legal protection. The trademark claimant must demonstrate that the color has become recognized as distinctive of one single source of goods. If others copy the look early, it never becomes associated with just one designer or source, and consequently, never becomes a proprietary trademark. With sales increasing and no other red sole trend, the Louboutin style gained traction as a trademark.

Meanwhile, in 1995, the U.S. Supreme Court confirmed that color could serve as a trademark, just like a name, or logo, or imprint on the rump of a cow. But, since commercially distinguishable colors are finite in number and not often perceived as brands, the Court said that the owner of a color brand must prove the public has come to recognize a particular color associated with a brand and not just used it for ornamentation or utility.

Here is where the well-known Louboutin consumer, Kate White of Cosmo, J Lo and those thousands of high profile Louboutin owners come in. Based on the demand for his shoes and the paltry competition from others, Louboutin argued that the red sole of his footwear singularly pointed to him. After an unsuccessful attempt in 2001, Louboutin succeeded in 2007 in obtaining a U.S. trademark registration. The Patent and Trademark Office granted the red sole trademark registration with nary a comment.

No one challenged the registration at the time, no one copied the shoe style, and no one noticed the legal monopoly. Others were producing colored soles, including Donald J. Pliner with his green sole, but red was still the empire of Louboutin?that is, until Yves Saint Laurent began offering monochromatic red shoe styles in its 2011 resort shoe collection, with both the shoe soles and uppers in red.

The monochromatic YSL style differed from Louboutins since the classic Louboutin look featured a red sole with contrasting color upper shoe?usually black, but often Swarovski crystal, metallic letter or animal printed pony fur. Louboutin?s U.S. trademark registration did not make that distinction.

Honey bees fight back against Varroa

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The parasitic mite Varroa destructor is a major contributor to the recent mysterious death of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Biology finds that specific proteins, released by damaged larvae and in the antennae of adult honey bees, can drive hygienic behavior of the adults and promote the removal of infected larvae from the hive.

V. destructor sucks the blood (hemolymph) of larval and adult bees leaving them weakened and reducing the ability of their immune systems to fight off infections. Not that honey bees have strong immune systems in the first place since they have fewer immunity genes than solitary insects such as flies and moths. These tiny mites can also spread viral disease between hosts. This double onslaught is thought to be a significant contributor to Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).

But all is not lost -- honey bees have evolved a way to fight back: hygienic behavior where diseased or parasitized larvae are removed from their brood cells, and Varroa-sensitive hygienic behavior which they use to reduce the number of reproductive mites on remaining larvae.

To find exactly how bees respond to hive infections, researchers from Canada looked at the natural behavioral of bees in the presence of damaged larvae and compared this to protein differences in the larvae and adults. After scanning 1200 proteins the team found that several proteins, including LOC552009 (of unknown function but similar to ApoO), found in the antennae of adults were associated with both uncapping brood cells and the removal of larvae. Other proteins were involved in olfaction or in signal transduction, probably helping the adults find infected larvae amongst a brood.

In damaged larvae, transglutaminase, a protein involved in blood clotting, was upregulated, which appeared to be a key component in regulating the adult's behavior. Other proteins indicated adaptations to help fight infection, including chitin biosynthesis and immune responses.

Dr Leonard Foster from CHIBI at the University of British Columbia, who led this research said, "Bee keepers have previously focused on selecting bees with traits such as enhanced honey production, gentleness and winter survival. We have found a set of proteins which could be used to select colonies on their ability to resist Varroa mite infestation and can be used to find individuals with increased hygienic behavior. Given the increasing resistance of Varroa to available drugs this would provide a natural way of ensuring honey farming and potentially survival of the species."

Have you ever helped someone remove themselves from an abusive relationship? What are your thoughts on domestic violence in marriage or dating?

I have recently encouraged a friend of mine to leave her abusive partner because she would always cover herself with make up and hoodies. I told my husband about this situation and he suggested that I remove myself from the equation and we got into an argument because I felt like he was supporting the abuser.

My husband said that he does not want his wife involve in something that has nothing to do with me and he will hurt a mofo if harm come my way. In some way, I am touched but still mad at him because I feel like if it was his sisters or mother...he would be like Boko Haram with atomic bombs. Why is it when it is someone that is not family...men will turn their heads?

My friend won't press charges and I am afraid for her children. She has two girls and one boy. She shared with me that her son is imitating the abuser by threatening to kill her and she need to sleep with one eye open. That bothers me because I know if she doesn't get out...she will be in a body bag.

I have successfully helped women get out of abusive relationship because their families were involved but she has not family that live in our region. She moved from her hometown to be with her partner and I was introduced to her by a survivor. This is exactly what she looks like and it is no lie.

How can a woman or man get out of an abusive relationship and do you think it is easy to do so even with a sure way out?

Since your husband is unlikely to change his behavior without being forced into it, it?s going to be up to you to enforce changes in your marriage.?

If your husband asks you to refrain yourself from that subject, then obey him and avoid bringing it up so peace can reign in your home.

Are you sure you've convinced her enough? She has been assaulted physically and according to the law, she definitely deserves justice.

Her children is not the issue here...the issue is that she deserves the right to a happy life, she deserves peace of mind...that which her husband has denied her of. So I feel it would be proper if she takes legal action against him.

If she's a christian, she can take the case to God, but in the mean time she must rise up and fight for her right as a woman.

What you should or rather she should note is that if you don't train yourselves to look at your arguments as a couple in a more constructive way then chances are you are bound to repeat the same mistakes again and again, until you all get tired and frustrated with the same resurfacing of the problem.

Mynd... It is difficult to convince some women to leave their abusers. I also have seen men that were abused by their women as well. It is more common then we know but it is happening in silence.

She doesn't have any family members in our area that she can go to for a while. But I have offered to pay for a hotel since she is not allowed to stay at our home. My husband wants no parts of it.

I am mad at him for that but he is my husband so I say nothing else to him about it.

Haba, I contributed, before I got errm *coughs* distracted. I mentioned advising her to go on a trial separation, probably with an ultimatum for the guy to change his ways else it becomes permanent.?
I guess you could also take pictures of her and post to family members instead of that Rihanna pic. Alternatively, get them to lure her home for a visit, then prevent her from going back until the partner comes around.

I have stopped wondering what goes on in some female minds since I was told by one she likes it when her bf beats her a little, call it a fetish or whatever.

At the end of the day, it's her decision to stay or go. Even though you care, you can't make it for her, only point her in the right direction.
