Cricket's Huawei Mercury Ice gets redesigned, hitting Radio Shack Sep. 5

Huawei Mercury Ice

Huawei has redesigned, renamed and re-released the Mercury (aka the Huawei Honor), and Cricket is bringing it to Radio Shack on September 5. In addition to the new handle, the phone's face is now offered in a pearl white, and just like we told you yesterday, unlimited MUVE music is part of the package. Fifty dollars a month for unlimited talk, text, data, and music streaming isn't a bad deal at all.

Unfortunately, the software doesn't seem to have been updated and it's still running on Gingerbread under Huawei's tweaks. We've got no information about any pricing, but we expect it to be priced competitively. 

Certainly this is no barn burner, but with a fairly decent Ice Cream Sandwich ROM in the wild and a respectable hacking community, it may be worth traveling to your local Radio Shack to have a look. There's a couple more pics after the break

NHL, NHLPA talks on hold for a day

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL's collective bargaining talks are on hold until Friday.

Donald Fehr, the executive director of the NHL Players' Association, had originally said he was "optimistic" the union would table a counterproposal Thursday. Fehr could extend a counteroffer on Friday at the NHL's New York office.

The current agreement expires Sept. 15, when the league has said it will lock out the players if a new deal is not in place.

The two sides are at odds over hockey-related revenue. The league wants to knock down the players' percentage to 46. The players' share of HRR was 57 percent last season. Fehr said changes in how HRR is calculated would see the amount of money players give up to escrow increase "significantly." Under the NHL's proposal, the union said current contracts would not be paid in full.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman issued his second proposal to the NHLPA on Tuesday in New York, an offering he called "meaningful" and "significant." On Wednesday, the two sides met again, and broke the proposal down with several player representatives in attendance.

Fehr was accompanied Wednesday by NHLPA special consultant Mathieu Schneider, as well as Mike Komisarek (Toronto), Douglas Murray (San Jose), George Parros (Florida), Chris Phillips (Ottawa), Kevin Shattenkirk (St. Louis), Kevin Westgarth (Los Angeles), Craig Adams (Pittsburgh), Nick Bonino (Anaheim), B.J. Crombeen (Tampa Bay), Alex Goligoski (Dallas) and Ron Hainsey (Winnipeg).

The NHL regular season is slated to begin on Oct. 11.

Canadian Banks Have Bought Pretty Much Everything in Canada

Canada?s banks can stop looking around their home land, as there?s nothing much left for them to buy.

The nation?s banks have been particularly acquisitive ?since the financial crisis, scooping up Canadian assets of international banks, while also expanding outside their home country.

KBW analysts on Thursday called Wednesday?s deal?by Bank of Nova Scotia to buy ING Direct Canada for $3.17 billion the last of the trend.

?ING Direct most likely represents the last bank for sale in Canada,? the analysts wrote.

In some ways, Scotiabank?s deal is representative of what has gone on since the crisis:?Scotiabank gets needed deposits and ING Groep , advised by J.P. Morgan on the deal, continues its effort to trim itself.

Canada?s banking institutions have completed 118 acquisitions, including purchased stakes of at least 50%, since the start of 2008, according to Dealogic. Scotiabank?s deal would be the fifth-largest such deal in that time frame if completed, the data provider said.

KBW called the deal expensive, but?necessary because Scotiabank ?will improve its funding base with the deal, which is extremely important.?

The acquisition marks Scotiabank?s third major deal in Canada since the financial crisis.

Canada?s banking system is largely consolidated into five national banks. The consolidation is more extreme than in the U.S., where the nation?s biggest four banks have a large market share, but dozens of second and third tier banks play important regional roles.

In the U.S. there are some?7,000 banks. Many believe consolidation would strengthen the system, much like Canada, where its banks are considered more stable. Others say small banks help maintain competition.

Canadian banks have been poking into the U.S. with deals, including Bank of Montreal's purchase of Milwaukee?s Marshall & Ilsley and Toronto Dominion ?s purchase of Chrysler Financial, both struck last year.

Now that Canada is apparently fully consolidated, those five banks may be looking even more to their south.

    Interest ~ Ford to bring Lincoln brand to China in 2014


    More news to do with the People?s Republic ? everybody wants to sell there! This time, Ford Motor Company is planning to introduce its Lincoln luxury marque in China by the second half of 2014. It has already made some appointments for the region ? Richard Baker as general manager and Pei-wen Hsu and Joanne Kao as deputy general managers for marketing and sales respectively.

    Lincoln China will sell its cars through an independent dealer network that will offer a personalised brand experience.?Ford will start meeting with interested dealers in China this autumn.

    Ford have been wanting to bring the century-old brand to China for the last two years, and the 2013 Lincoln MKZ was designed with Chinese customers? tastes in mind, so says Ford CEO Alan Mulally. It?s safe to assume then, that the MKZ, which will go on sale in the US in the autumn, will be part of the line-up on offer.

    The Lincolns sold in China will initially be US-manufactured. So they will cost more, due to China?s luxury taxes (which depend on engine size) and a 25% import duty. Chinese buyers would therefore have to fork out more than the US$35,925 asked for the new MKZ.

    Lincoln isn?t exactly making waves in its home market at the moment, but if GM?s success with Buick in China is anything to go by, this one should work pretty well for Ford.

    Second accused LulzSec hacker arrested in Sony Pictures breach

    LOS ANGELES --?A second suspected member of the clandestine hacking group LulzSec was arrested on Tuesday on charges he took part in an extensive computer breach of Sony Pictures Entertainment, the FBI said.

    Raynaldo Rivera, 20, of Tempe, Arizona, surrendered to U.S. authorities in Phoenix six days after a federal grand jury in Los Angeles returned an indictment charging him with conspiracy and unauthorized impairment of a protected computer.

    If convicted, Rivera faces up to 15 years in prison.

    The indictment, unsealed on Tuesday, accuses Rivera and co-conspirators of stealing information from Sony Corp's Sony Pictures' computer systems in May and June 2011 using an "SQL injection" attack against the studio's website, a technique commonly employed by hackers.

    The indictment said Rivera then helped to post the confidential information onto LulzSec's website and announced the intrusion via the hacking group's Twitter account.

    While Rivera was the only person named in the indictment, the FBI said his co-conspirators included Cody Kretsinger, 24, a confessed LulzSec member who pleaded guilty in April to federal charges stemming from his role in the Sony attack.

    Following the breach, LulzSec published the names, birth dates, addresses, emails, phone numbers and passwords of thousands of people who had entered contests promoted by Sony, and publicly boasted of its exploits.

    "From a single injection we accessed EVERYTHING," the hackers said in a statement at the time. "Why do you put such faith in a company that allows itself to become open to these simple attacks?"

    Authorities have said the Sony breach ultimately cost the company more than $600,000.

    LulzSec, an underground group also known as Lulz Security, is an offshoot of the international hacking collective Anonymous and has taken credit for such cyber incursions on a number of government and private sector websites.

    The latest indictment says Rivera, who went by the online nicknames of "neuron," "royal" and "wildicv," is suspected of using a proxy server in a bid to conceal his Internet Protocol, or IP, address, and avoid detection.

    Court documents revealed in March that an Anonymous leader known as Sabu, whose real name is Hector Monsegur, had pleaded guilty to hacking-related charges and provided information on his cohorts to the FBI.

    That same month, five other suspected leaders of Anonymous, all them alleged to be LulzSec members as well, were charged by federal authorities with computer hacking and other offenses.

    An accused British hacker, Ryan Cleary, 20, was indicted by a federal grand jury in June on charges related to LulzSec attacks on several media companies, including Sony Pictures.

    Kretsinger, who pleaded guilty to the same two charges now facing Rivera, is slated to be sentenced on October 25. A federal prosecutor said he would likely receive substantially less than the 15-year maximum prison term carried by those offenses.

    Anonymous and its offshoots focused initially on fighting attempts at Internet regulation and the blocking of free illegal downloads but have since taken aim at the Church of Scientology, global banking and other targets.

    Anonymous, and LulzSec in particular, became notorious in late 2010 when they launched what they called the "first cyber war" in retaliation for attempts to shut down Wikileaks.

The EA83's claim to fame is its 2560 x 1440 WQHD resolution that brings four times the pixel count of 1280 x 720 panels and 99 percent Adobe RGB accuracy. There's no word on the price tag for either of these, but they should start shipping in November.

    Skrtel from hero to zero as City force Reds draw

    Martin Skrtel, scorer of Liverpool's opening goal, gifted Premier League champions Manchester City their second equaliser, and a point, in an absorbing 2-2 draw at Anfield on Sunday.

    But the consolation for Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, still searching for his first league victory since taking charge of the Reds, was that this was a much improved display following last week's 3-1 loss to West Bromwich Albion.

    Skrtel opened the scoring with a powerful and unstoppable header from a perfectly-delivered right-wing Steven Gerrard corner in the 34th minute, a goal which was thoroughly deserved given the enterprising manner in which Rodgers's team had undertaken their daunting meeting with the champions.

    Yaya Toure pulled City level in the 63rd minute but it took the home team just three more to regain the lead through a magnificently-struck Luis Suarez free-kick after Jack Rodwell had been harshly judged to have handled as he blocked a Gerrard shot.

    It was a dangerous position, some 22 yards from goal, and Suarez, who had looked low on confidence to that point, needed no second invitation to curl a superb strike around the City wall and beyond England goalkeeper Joe Hart into the bottom right-hand corner.

    Anfield had an air of the big occasion about it for Rodgers's home league bow, not least of all because the manager handed a full debut to teenage winger Raheem Stering, an almost cult figure with the Liverpool faithful.

    It was easy to see why, in the 18th minute, when the 17-year-old planted the perfect left-wing cross onto the toe of Fabio Borini who volleyed wide from four yards.

    The miss might have proved costly as City launched a counter-attack with Tevez taking James Milner's through pass and succeeding in rounding Reina.

    The Argentine forward was forced wide but then saw his cross-shot almost put in by Martin Kelly whose attempted headed clearance struck the post and was gathered by a grateful Reina.

    It was a fast-paced opening with Liverpool's game plan upset after just four minutes when Lucas limped off with pulled leg muscle to be replaced by Jonjo Shelvey.

    But as Liverpool gained momentum, City were forced onto the back foot and into conceding the opening goal.

    In the second half Mario Balotelli, performing admirable but unfamiliar defensive duties, inadvertently played his team into trouble when the ball deflected off him into the path of Suarez but the Liverpool forward crossed into an empty area.

    City manager Roberto Mancini threw on Rodwell and Dzeko in an attempt to breathe life into s fading performance and the tactic paid instant dividends with Yaya Toure's equaliser.

    Tevez broke down the right and his cross was dealt with unconvincingly by Reina, a half-hearted punch which rebounded off Martin Kelly and into the path of the alert Toure who converted from six yards.

    City only remained level for three minutes before conceding a second goal although Skrtel's moment of indecision helped make things all square again.

    Thereafter, Skrtel tried to make amends with an 18-yard shot which cleared the City bar while Dzeko twice came close as City attempted to win a league game by a 3-2 scoreline for the fourth consecutive match.

    Liverpool substitute striker Andy Carroll might have secured the three points in the other direction in the closing minutes, however, as he rose to meet a Suarez cross and saw his header cleared off the line by Vincent Kompany.
